Our SocietyThe Baltimore Ethical Society nurtures a reverence for life unfettered by traditional religious beliefs and doctrines. It supports people who are trying to live moral and purposeful lives based on reason, compassion, and a commitment to the worth and dignity of each human being. Consistent with an Ethical Culture vision of a more just and humane world, the Baltimore Ethical Society was formed in 1950 as the first racially integrated congregation in the city. We are committed to our city, and our home is in the Congress Hotel, located in Baltimore's up-and-coming westside redevelopment area. At our weekly meetings, speakers address ethical and religious concerns as well as social and political issues. After these talks, we form a circle and hold discussions where we ask questions and express our own ideas. At various times of the year, we participate in ceremonies that celebrate the passing of the seasons and commemorate milestones in our lives. Other activities include adult classes and workshops, reading and poetry groups, peace and justice workshops and initiatives, food drives, work parties, potlucks, picnics and, of course, regular meetings of our board and committees. The Society is supported by the pledges and contributions of our members and friends and by their volunteer work. Membership is open to all who share our values, and visitors and guests are always welcome. |
